What is SEO, its types and how it works

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization, which is usually referred to as SEO is a strategy or tactic which is used in order to increase traffic and the number of visitors to a website mainly by getting a high rank in the search engines. There are several search engines that people use including Google, Yahoo and Bing. By taking the help of SEO, a website can earn a higher rank on such search engines which will automatically attract more visitors to a website.

SEO does nothing but makes a website accessible by increasing its visibility. An example of a common internet user can be taken to further elaborate on this point. When an internet user wants to find something on Google, he will only scroll through the first page and there is a high chance that he will find what he was looking for. Therefore he would never make an effort to move on to the next page of the search results. Due to this reason the websites on the second page of search results will never be viewed. This is why SEO is important.

Types of SEO

SEO is mainly categorized in two branches;

White Hat SEO

White Hat SEO includes proper methods which are ethical and effective.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO is the use of unethical methods which can include spamming and taking other shortcuts as well.
White Hat SEO might take some effort but it should be noticed that Black Hat SEO is often caught and recognized by the search engines which might result in a total ban of the website as well.

SEO works mainly by the appropriate use of keywords and link building (will be explained later in the proceeding chapters.)
